Product Environmental Footprint Launched!
EU-wide methods to facilitate the sale of green products across the EU’s single market have finally been released this week. Currently there is no universal way to measure the environmental performance of products and organisations meaning companies have to conduct environmental assessments based on different national methods. SME’s in particular have struggled with this as releasing products into multiple markets that require different assessments can become very costly. The Single Market for Green Products initiative proposes two methods to measure environmental performance throughout their lifecycle - Product Environmental Footprint (PEF) and the Organisation Environmental Footprint (OEF). The initiative also recommends the use of these methods to Member States, companies, private organisations and the financial community through a Commission Recommendation. A three-year testing period has been announced in order to help develop product and sector specific rules through a multi-stakeholder process that will be launched soon. An open call for volunteers will be published by the commission and shall be reported in Newsflash the moment the information is released. A second phase will build on an in-depth evaluation of the results of the three-year testing and additional actions carried out under the Communication and the Recommendation. Based on this evaluation, the Commission will decide on further policy applications of the PEF and OEF methods READ MORE.
