The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has added two new substances of very high concern (SVHCs) to the Candidate List. The Candidate List is a list of substances that may have serious effects on human health or the environment.A series of mixed alkyl diesters were added to the ‘candidate list’ under the REACH chemicals regulation because of their reproductive toxicity when the contain 0.3% or more dihexyl phthalate.

The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) is seeking views on three applications for authorised chemicals under the REACH regulation. The two latest applications relate to the use of trichloroethylene in fabric dyeing and the other to diarsenic trioxide’s use in ammonia production. Applications to continue using diarsenic trioxide had to be submitted by November 2013.

World Water Week took place in Stockholm last week. During the week the presence of harmful chemicals, not only in consumer products, but also in the waste water as a result of the production process was discussed. The elimination of these harmful chemicals retrospectively from water is no longer sustainable from an energy, economic or technical point perspective.
