Web Streaming of conference on Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services (MAES) in Europe

A landmark conference on Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services (MAES), hosted by Commissioner Potočnik, took place in Brussels on 22 May 2014 and attracted over 300 participants. Speakers included Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner for Research and Innovation, Sharon Dijksma, Minister for Agriculture of the Netherlands, Pavan Sukhdev, who led the ground-breaking study on The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB), and Lisa Emelia Svensson, Swedish Ambassador Oceans, Seas and Freshwater. The MAES action is part of the EU 2020 Biodiversity Strategy and foresees that “Member States, with the assistance of the Commission, will map and assess the state of ecosystems and their services in their national territory by 2014, assess the economic value of such services, and promote the integration of these values into accounting and reporting systems at EU and national level by 2020”. The approach is expected to ensure that decision making takes account of impacts and dependencies on ecosystems and furthermore increase the understanding of the connection between natural capital and the economy.
