Following a compromise reached between rapporteur Margrete Auken from the Greens/EFA and other political groups, the European Parliament’s Environment Committee has approved both mandatory charging in the food sector and an 80% reduction target for lightweight plastic bags by 2019. Compromise amendments have been accepted ahead of a vote on 10th March on the European Commission’s proposal to reduce plastic bag consumption throughout Europe.
