EU reaches deal on invasive species

The European Parliament and Council of Ministers have worked out a provisional deal on the Commission’s proposal aimed at preventing and managing Invasive Alien Species (IAS) in Europe. During negotiations, the Greek Presidency rejected the call for national derogations included in the EP’s amendment. However, it agreed with Parliament’s suggestion to keep an uncapped list of IAS of Union concern instead of restricting it to 50 species. Priority will be given to IAS that cause the biggest damage as well as those that are expected to become a problem. Enhanced regional cooperation between Member States should deal with species that are native to a part of the EU, but start to invade others. Once the Committee of Member States’ Permanent Representatives (COREPER) endorses the agreement, it will be put to a vote in the Environment Committee. READ MORE
