Cooperation needed to reduce harmful chemicals in the water cycle
World Water Week took place in Stockholm last week. During the week the presence of harmful chemicals, not only in consumer products, but also in the waste water as a result of the production process was discussed. The elimination of these harmful chemicals retrospectively from water is no longer sustainable from an energy, economic or technical point perspective. Conference speakers underlined the need to control substances at source through reduced use of harmful chemicals in processes and products. The seminar highlighted positive examples from progressive companies and showed how the regulatory development needs to be adapted. ChemSec, involving Boots Chemists UK and H&M Sweden was an example of an interesting partnership approach between business and the water treatment sector to tackle the issue proactively.
